Have you ever heard of twin tip ski? Here we will explain where the name comes from, the ski specialities for which they are recommended and the facilities they offer when practising this sport.

What are twin tip skis like?

The name “twin-tip” refers to the shape of the front and back of the ski. This type of ski allows the skier to take off and land forward and backwards while gliding down the slope.

It is a modified version of alpine skis (here is an example from our shop). While most alpine skis have a clearly defined and curved front part (known as the tip) and the rear part (called the tail) is usually flat, twin-tip skis have both tips curved. The main difference between the tail and the tip is usually the width, different models are depending on the activities to be performed. They usually have an hourglass shape, being slightly narrower in the middle. Double-tip skis can be wider (for greater stability and terrain variation), or narrower (for greater speed).

In any case, as a general rule, double-tip skis are very versatile and are specially designed for acrobatics.

This type of ski became popular among young people in the late 1990s, which is why several changes were made to the design of ski resorts. The aim was to create more adapted spaces for these users to avoid conflicts between the more traditional skiers and those who practice different jumps and acrobatics.

How do I know if this is what I’m looking for?

The twin tips design has become very common among athletes skiing in snowparks or on soft snow slopes. Most modern twin-tip skis are specially designed to be flexible and durable. They are made for ski turns, jumps and other impressive tricks. They are considered “soft” skis because they cushion landings during jumps. The twin tips are ideal for gliding over virgin snow.

Nowadays they have become so popular that you can find the twin tips on other types of skis (besides alpine skis), such as powder skis or all-mountain skis.

They are usually used for freestyle or off-piste skiing in soft snow. They give a lot of play when descending the slopes, as you can ski in both directions (forwards and backwards).
It is common to associate snowboards with twin-tip skis, as both allow for a wide variety of jumps and tricks. In the snow parks and in the designated areas, you’ll see snowboarders and skiers alike practising acrobatics.
